Mottisfont and Hinton Ampner

We had a day out to visit two stately homes run by the National Trust.  The first Montisfont was built onto a Medieval priory and is set in magnificent grounds and gardens, surrounded by ancient oak trees and babbling brooks that fill up from a font or well.   Hence the name Mottisfont.

We then went to see Hinton Ampner, a stately home left to the National Trust by the last Earl of Sherborn.  The house was extensively damaged by fire in the 1960's. His extensive collection of paintings, crockery and objects d'art was saved.  The gardens are beautiful and there are sweeping views out to the south downs from the back of the house.
