Lakes District - Ulverston

We woke this morning to the sound of rain.  The first time since we arrive in the UK that we have had any rain and it was pouring.

We decided to visit the nearby town of Ulverston. With it's colourfully rendered houses, cobbled streets and inviting side alleys there's enough of interest to keep you enthralled for days.

Surrounding the town is the gently rolling farmland of the Furness Peninsula while the coastline provides beautiful vistas over Morecambe Bay.

When you approach Ulverston, there is a prominent memorial on the top of Hoad Hill. The Sir John Barrow Monument which was modelled on an earlier version of the Eddystone Lighthouse and built in 1850 in honour of John Barrow.  It certainly looks like a lighthouse and had us somewhat confused, what was a lighthouse doing some distance from the sea.

We went to the Visitor Information centre and discovered there is a Laurel and Hardy museum in town.  Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston and the museum came about due to one mans collection and lifelong obcession with the comedic duo.

It is a huge museum with a collection of memorbillia, photos, costumes and more than 100 movies which have now been digitalised and are shown throughout the day.  We spent several hours inside the museum.
