Colin on the city walls |
Our week in the Lakes District went very quickly. Then it was off to York. We booked an apartment just outside the city walls for 4 nights and then swapped over to an apartment right in the centre of town for the remainder of our stay. We couldnt stay there the whole time as it was already booked to someone else.
On our first day in York we climbed up Cliffords tower. First there is a steep set of stairs to reach the tower and once in there you have to climb a steep spiral staircase to reach to the top of the tower but once up there you are rewarded with 360 degree views.
After doing that we decided to walk around the city walls. At 3.4 kilometres long, the beautifully preserved walls are the longest medieval town walls in England. The completion of the entire circuit takes approximately 2 hours. There are five main bars or gateways, one Victorian gateway, one postern (a small gateway) and 45 towers. The walls weigh approximately 100,000 metric tonnes. and best of all it is free.
After all that we need a relaxing activity so we chose a nice sedate boat cruise on the river, the river Ouse. it takes about an hour to complete the cruise.
