Riga

Riga's Old Town is in the centre of the city and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage.

The city's architecture is very varied, Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau.  The buildings are colourful and have interesting detail.  I loved the Art Nouveau with it's statues and figurines on the buildings and cast iron balconies.  The narrow cobblestoned streets are full of history and architectural wonder.

Chalk Street has the lovely Livu Square which is a colourful oasis of green and pretty flower beds.

The most famous landmark in Riga is The Freedom Monument in the centre of Riga on Freedom Boulevard.  It was erected where during WW1 stood a sculpture of Peter 1.  It was constructed between 1930 and 1935 and is made of granite, travertine, copper and gold.  At the top of the monument is a copper figure of a woman holding three gilded with gold stars.
