We are on an Insight Vacations tour of the Baltic States. Beginning in Warsaw where we stayed prior to commencing the tour.
After sightseeing in Warsaw we headed off on the coach for Vilnius the capital of Lithuania.
Vilnius's cobblestoned streets of the old town are brightly coloured and really pretty and dotted with many churches. I have never seen so many churches in a place so small. Small and quaint. It is the capital city but it's more like a little village. I really loved Vilnius. There were flowers everywhere, hanging baskets, flowerbeds, pots in doorways, tables with vases of flowers. Our hotel was located right in the middle of the old town opposite a beautiful pink church.
We went on a walking tour with a local guide who pointed out the various sights. We saw the
16th-century Gate of Dawn, containing a shrine with a sacred Virgin Mary icon, which once guarded an entrance to the original city.
We visited the Museum of Genocide Victims. The former KGB headquarters houses a museum dedicated to thousands of Lithuanians who were murdered, imprisoned or deported by the Soviet Union from WW2 to the 1960's. It is a graphic depiction of what happened there and makes you realise how lucky you are to have been born in Australia.
