Trakai
From Vilnius we did a trip out to Trakai to visit Trakai Castle located on a lake, Lake Galve. It is a medieval castle dating back to the 1400's and is very picturesque sitting on the lake surrounded by pretty sailing boats. It was the headquarters of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes.
You can take a tourist boat across the lake to the castle or walk there over a bridge. The castle itself has been added to over the years. The top two floors were not there in the 1400's.
Trakai is popular with locals as a boating and swimming. Lots of holiday makers were there as it is the school holidays at the moment.
We got to taste the local speciality a mince filled pastry called Kybyn which was delicious.
