As we do every year we come to England we had a week in Bath.
We rent a flat for the week.
A friend from Australia spends time in Bath with her friends and relatives who we have also come to know and we have a lovely time with this group of people.
The city became a spa with the Latin name aquae Sulis (waters of Sulis) in 60AD when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although hot springs were known even before then.
Bath abbey was founded in the 7th century and became a religious centre. Bath became popular as a spa town in the Georgian era. Georgian architecture, crafted from Bath stone includes the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Pump Room and the Assembly Rooms.
Jane Austen lived in Bath in the early 19th century. The Jane Austen festival is held annually in September and thousands descend on Bath dressed in Regency clothing. There is a parade through the streets of Bath at the beginning of the festival. It is a fabulous sight.
My top 10 things to do in Bath are. 1. Visit the Roman Baths, 2 Relax at the Thermae Bath Spa, you cant take a dip at the Roman Baths these days but you can still enjoy the same natural hot spring water at the Thermae Bath Spa. 3. Lots of museums and galleries such as the Holbourne Museum, the fashion museum and the Victoria Art Gallery. 4. Climb the 212 steps to the roof of Bath Abbey for sensational views. 5. Visit the Jane Austen Centre, 6. Take in the views of Bath Skyline from Alexandra Park, 7. Try some Bath spa water at the Pump Room and enjoy a posh afternoon tea, 8. Visit the famous Sally Lunn bun shop, 9. Visit the Parade Gardens, sit in the sun in a deck chair and listen to a band in the bandstand. 10. Take a boat trip to Bathampton and back.
I could probably come up with another 10 things to do. This year we went to the Theatre Royal and saw Felicity Kendall in a play. there are lovely restaurants and cafes. The Sydney Gardens are lovely. There is a great market on Saturdays at the old railway station.
We always find something new and exciting to do. Great places to visit nearby as well.
