Saturday 10th August
My birthday today. I woke this morning and Colin gave me a
birthday card he purchased the day before.
It was written in Czech and it said 1954, two years out but never
mind. In my favour. this has become quite a tradition now. . Ever since a few years ago in Norway Colin went out in search of a birthday card for me and he came back with a card that actually said Congratulation on getting your driving licence, Norwegian. We laughed about it and ever since if we are in a non English speaking country on my birthday he buys a card in that language.
We looked out the window and it was raining
quite heavily. So rain in Prague and
snow in Canberra on my birthday.
We collected some big umbrellas from the reception and
we headed out into the rain. We walked
to the Charles Bridge and crossed over it and walked on the other
side of the river. We found a café selling crepes so
we went in there and shared a gallette.
We returned to the hotel and saw the man
at the desk who wished me a happy birthday and he said he had a bottle of
champagne that he would put on ice in our room when we went out to dinner. He knew it was my birthday because Colin had asked him about where he could buy a card and the man had said that he would find it impossible to get one in English and Colin told him he didnt want one in English, he wanted one in Czech.
Later we found a lovely traditional style restaurant along a narrow cobblestone street. We had a very nice meal.
Afterwards we walked back to the hotel
and met the man at reception again and he told us there was champagne on ice in
our room and then he said, in room 17 right.
And we said, no room 7. He bolted
up the stairs and we went to our room.
Shortly there was a knock at the door and there he was the champagne and
two glasses. He had obviously managed to
retrieve it from room 17.
