Cambridge

We spent four nights staying with relatives in a suburb of Cambridge.

While we were there we visited the Cathedral town of Peterborough with it's 900 year old Norman Cathedral.  the day we went there was an exhibition showcasing a giant globe of the world with a satellite image of earth projected onto the globe.

We travelled on the Neme Valley Railway by steam train from Wansford station passing through Orton Mere, Ferry Meadows and Yarwell Junction and then arriving at Peterborough.  The trip is 12 kms and takes about an our each way.

Another day we visited Wicken Fen which is run by the National Trust.  It is one of Europe's most important wetlands and supports an abundant array of wildlife.  There are more than 9000 species of plants, birds and dragonflies.

There are raised boardwalks to follow through the reeds and plenty of dragonflies to spot along the way.  There are some bird hides where you can look out for birds but unfortunately we didnt see any the day we went.  We did see a lot of dragonflies.  There are many different varieties.

They also have a herd of highland cows and Konik ponies grazing in the nearby fields.

We visited the town of Ely dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral they call The Ship of the Fens because it towers over the low lying fenland and appears like a ship.

We had a day out to another National Trust property, Anglesey Abbey, a Jacobean with magnificent gardens and a working water mill.  The day we were there they were making flour and selling packets of the freshly milled flour.

Owned by Lord Fairhaven the former run down country house and garden was transformed into a cozy 1930's house in which to entertain his guests.  Life revolved around horse riding and shooting and guests enjoyed 1930's luxury.
