The panoramic journey on the Glacier
Express through the Swiss Alps is one to remember. It is the most famous train journey in the world and the Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain in the world.
The 8-hour journey on board the slowest
express train in the world takes passengers over 291 bridges and through 91
tunnels. From St. Moritz the train snakes its way through the
Albula Valley and then continues through the Rhine
Gorge, Switzerland’s very own Grand Canyon.
It is utterly spectacular. Everywhere you look is stunning breathtaking scenery.
When we arrived in Zermatt we had to phone our hotel from
the station so they could send an electric mini bus to collect us. Zermatt is a car free village.
The electric bus took us to our hotel. A very elegant hotel high up on a hill with
breathtaking views of the most photographed mountain in the world, the
Matterhorn.
Our room was on the 5th floor and our
balcony had views of the majestic Matterhorn.
You cant help but be overawed by the view. I took many photos.
We later walked down into the township which was full of souvenir shops,
bakeries, cafes, bars and restaurants.
It was buzzing with people and whilst we were walking around the Swiss
Army walked right down the middle of the street leading horses. That was quite a sight. Definitely something you don't see every day. There is an old part of the town too, with original old chalets, cobblestoned streets and a statue of a 100 year old man who climbed the Matterhorn about 40 times.
