Our ship docked in Rousse and we had a full day excursion to Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi.
Our coach drove through the countryside which was quite an experience. The drivers here are absolutely lunatic. Our guide called them the immortals. We came very close on several occasions to having a head on collision.

We arrived first in the town Veliko Tarnovo which is perched
on the edge of a cliff. It is a very
pretty village. From there we drove to
the tiny village of Arbanasi and we visited a Nativity Church that has many
small rooms filled with frescoes. We returned
to Veliko Tarovo and walked along the cobblestoned artisan street where local
craftsmen showcase their talents.
Late in the afternoon we returned to the ship and walking
into our cabin there was a tray with a gorgeous birthday cake and bottle of
sparkling wine and on the bed was a towel fashioned into a giant bow. Happy birthday to me.
It was also the Captains Farewell dinner and our last night
onboard the Viking Aegir. We had a
sumptuous dinner and a few toasts to the Captain and crew and then a
traditional waving of our dinner napkins.
After dinner I shared the bottle of sparkling wine and cake with a small group of fellow passengers that we had become quite friendly with during the cruise.
